Top 5 Bars in Japan

Sadly the “golden age” of Japanese cocktails and bartending has past. While the level service is still the envy of the world, the cocktails are generally not very good. Happily there are a few places still doing great work.

1. Shot Bar Zoetrope

Type: Low Volume Bar
Location: 7 Chome-10-14 Nishishinjuku, 3rd floor #4, Shinjuku, Tokyo 160-0023 - map

Probaly the best selection of Japanese whiskey in Tokyo. Be sure to try their flights as they are incredibly well priced and a great way of trying several things.

2. Bar High Five

Type: Low Volume Bar
Location: 104-0061 Tokyo, Chuo Ginza 7-2-14, NO.26 Polestar Building, 4th Floor - map

Of the orignial cocktail bars from the "golden era" of Japanese bartending and cocktails; this is the only one still doing good work.

3. Gen Yamamoto

Type: Low Volume Bar
Location: 1-6-4 Azabu-Juban, Anniversary Building 1F, Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-0045 - map

Market fresh seasonal cocktails.

4. Bar K6

Type: Low Volume Bar
Location: 481 Higashiikesucho, Nakagyo-ku | 2F Vals Bldg., Kyoto 604-0922 - map

An amazing selection of scotch and cognac. A decent selection of Japanese whiskey and American whiskey. Spirits are exceedingly well priced. The cocktails are not very good, I would suggest sticking with spirits.

5. Nikka Blender's Bar

Type: Low Volume Restaurant Bar
Location: 5-4-3 Minami Aoyama, Minato , Tokyo, 107-0062 - map

An amazing selection of Nikka Whiskey priced very well. Many rare and hard to find Nikka bottles to sample from. They also have a selection of special blends to try, thus the name Blender's Bar.
